How to Search and Choose the Best REATLOR® to Represent You
By Rich Cosgrove, President Stark County Association of REALTORS®
You have finally decided you are ready to buy or sell a property, now what? The next step is to hire a REALTOR®. What is the best way to locate a list of agents to interview?
Personal referral – Hearing from someone that has been through the process and knows firsthand how their REALTOR® performed is the best. Who better to get a recommendation from than your trusted friends and family? Maybe you already know a REALTOR®, perhaps a friend or family member? If so, give them a call and set up an interview. It is a good idea to interview more than one agent even if you know them personally. Sometimes mixing business relationships and personal relationships can be tricky.
What if you don’t know anyone personally that has been through the process of buying or selling a property with a REALTOR®? In this case, online reviews are a great place to start. There are many websites where previous clients have interviewed real estate agents and rated their performance on things such as communication, area knowledge, availability, etc.
With some websites you can enter your information one time and it will be sent out to multiple agents at different brokerages who will call you to set up an interview. So, what do you ask when your interviewing a REALTOR® to work with?
The questions you ask will depend on what is most important to you. Are you interested in how many homes a REALTOR® has sold? Maybe you’re wondering what is their knowledge of your intended neighborhood or school district? Are they on a team or an individual agent? What is the commission they charge? Are they a full time agent? If you are a buyer, is there a fee for their service? You are the one conducting the interview so be sure to ask questions about what is important to you.
Your REALTOR® represents you in a transaction and is looking out for your best interest. They are your best ally and source for information. Choose a REALTOR® you like and trust.
