By Rich Cosgrove, President Stark County Association of REALTORS®
This week I want to talk a little bit about who The Stark County Association of REALTORS® are, and what we do. You may be surprised to learn that all members of the Association aren’t REALTORS® as the name may suggest. In fact, we have members who are lenders, title companies, inspectors, appraisers, and attorneys. These are affiliate members who work with our REALTORS® and the public to help facilitate a transaction from start to finish.
We provide elective continuing education classes for members as well as mandatory classes such as cannons of ethics, core law, and civil rights. A REALTOR® is required to renew their license every 3 years and the renewal must include a minimum of 30 hours of continuing education.
Stark County Association of REALTOR® also includes the jurisdiction of Carroll County, a small section of Mahoning County, and as of September 2020, Trumbull County. We recently consolidated the Stark County Association of REALTOR® with the Warren Area Board of REALTOR®. By consolidating the two associations we have grown in membership from 1025 members to almost 1450 members.
As REALTOR® we don’t just work with the public to help buy and sell real estate. We have committees that advocate for homeownership rights (legislative affairs) as well as a community outreach committee to name a few. To view a full list of our committees please visit www.starkrealtors.com.
The legislative affairs committee interviews local candidates and the association may endorse a candidate if recommended by the committee. They also recommend what State candidate the State Association and endorse and what National candidate the National Association should endorse. The committee asks each candidate questions about property preservation rights, point of sale inspections, taxes, etc.
The community outreach committee focuses on ways to help our communities and be involved in the neighborhoods we all live and work in. In 2019 we held a Safety and Preparedness Expo open to the public. The event featured over 30 local vendors who provided information to attendees on how to prepare for and stay safe during a calamity or emergency. Attendees learned how to create evacuation plans, assemble go bags, store foods and medicine safely, shelter in place, avoiding the dangers of opioid dependency, and general safety at home, while on the road, or on the water.
The committee has also held blood drives and partnered with Meals on Wheels. Volunteers deliver meals twice a month to area residents.
We are proud to live, work, and serve in our communities and neighborhoods.
